I guess this is (emo) growing up...

So last night I went to see Matt Pryor (The Get Up Kids, New Amsterdams) and Chris Conley (Saves the Day) at the Triple Rock. It was all very flashbacky. Aside from the fact that I haven't seen either of them in about 3 years (I was trying to think about it, and it seems I might not have seen Matt since Kansas City), I actually recognized some people in the crowd from shows I used to go to. It was pretty much full of people who were emo kids like 5 years ago, so it was kinda fun to see what they turned into. It was much preppier than you might imagine.

The show was good. Chris played a bunch of old Saves the Day songs and a few newer Saves the Day songs. Something about making it acoustic made it seem more mature though. Or maybe it was just the fact that he looked about 30. And kinda like Brett Favre, from a distance.

Then Matt came on. He played about 3 or 4 new songs, and then about half a dozen each of New Amsterdams songs and Get Up Kids songs. Both sets went on for at least an hour, which was a refreshing change from some of the things I've seen lately. People were singing along most of the time, but not really in an annoying way. It kinda added to the charm, actually.

And then I saw something I've never seen before: a two artist encore. Matt finished his set, people cheered for an encore, and he came back out and said he'd only play one if Chris played one too. So he did. He played "Imagine" with Matt joining in on sleigh bells. And then Matt played an encore too. I suppose it made sense to have them both play. I mean, I suppose they're kinda co-headlining. I was actually surprised that a bunch of people seemed to leave after Chris's set.

After the show Matt walked by and I gave him a high five and said something along the lines of "awesome set". I think it was Stacy who said lately she's had more and more trouble talking to people in bands, and I can totally relate to that. Like, I could barely get out a two word phrase. The same kind of thing happened to me at the Doomtree show. I bought a Crescent Moon CD after his set and shook his hand and again had trouble saying more than "That was a great set" to him. And I was standing right by Dessa on a couple different occasions and didn't even make an attempt to say anything to her. But she's intimidating. Seriously.

The only thing that kinda sucked about the whole affair was that I got a parking ticket. $34, which isn't that terrible, but now I feel like I have to justify it by parking illegally more often. Like, the last two times I parked there illegally, nothing happened. If I can get it up to 4 or 5 times, it'll feel like I'm still saving money by not paying to park in a ramp. I don't know why, but I had a bad feeling about it going in. Maybe just because there were a lot of cars there and it seemed like one of those times when they would rake in like hundreds of dollars just by enforcing things. Or maybe just because I'm psychic. Who knows...

Also, one other cool thing I wanted to mention: B-Sides "R" Us. It seemed related enough to throw in it here. It's got a bunch of rare songs from a bunch of different bands. There's not a lot there that's terribly thrilling, but there's some Death Cab, some Elliot Smith, and maybe some other things you'd find interesting. It's worth at least looking through the list. I found some old Motion City Soundtrack stuff that had been pretty much impossible to find, as well as a recording of the aforementioned Get Up Kids show in KC. So that was pretty awesome.
