I just tried to ford the river and my fucking car almost died

So I was driving back to Madison tonight. Things seemed to be going well. Then I drove through a river (of sorts).

I was on my way back to Madison from Minneapolis. I got to Baraboo or somewhere thereabouts. This was when things started to go awry. I came to a stop light and noticed that the road in front of me was blocked off by some barricades. There were two cars stopped at the light ahead of me at this point. One of them was moving over to turn off, when I noticed one of the barricades was blowing across the road. It's still not clear to me whether the road was supposed to be blocked of whether the rest of the barricades had just blown into the road as well. They all seemed really haphazardly placed, so I'm kinda leaning toward the latter. In any case, the other cars were turning and I didn't want to risk it, so I followed them and turned off as well.

At this point, it became sort of like a "choose your own adventure" detour. There was no labeled detour, so we were just finding our own way. I followed the other two cars, but had no idea where they were ultimately going or whether they knew any better than I did. We drove for about 10 minutes in a way that seemed kinda aimless to me. Then I started to notice some of the after-effects of the recent bad weather.

Weather aficionados among you are certainly aware of the bad weather that hit southern Wisconsin over the last few days. There were trees fallen by the side of the road, leaves everywhere, and a few scattered branches here and there. It was kinda odd, but none of it really impeded our driving.

And then suddenly the guy in front of me hit his brakes pretty hard. And I had no idea why. The road was kinda wet, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. And then he drove on a little further, and water sprayed up everywhere. And this is when I noticed the "river".

I mean, I suppose it depends on how you define "river", but it seemed to fit the title pretty well. It was 6+ inches deep, 30-40 feet wide, and it was flowing across the road. The only issue I'd have with it would be permanence, and I'm not really sure if anyone expects a river to be permanent.

But anyway, I saw the two cars in front of me cross it just fine, so I ventured across as well. And it seemed shaky for a while there, but ultimately I pulled through.

About half an hour of blind wandering later, I found my way back to the road I had started on. It added about 25 minutes to my trip, but aside from that, it wasn't too terrible.
